Indicative fee ranges

The differences between techniques reflect manufacturing and chair time: custom lingual braces are made individually for each patient, clear aligners depend mainly on the number of aligners, and conventional fixed braces are charged per semester, as is usual in France.

What the written quote includes

French regulations require a written quote before any orthodontic treatment. At the practice it is prepared after the assessment and states:

• the technique proposed, with alternatives where they exist;
• the expected duration, in semesters or months;
• the total fee and what it covers (appliance, fitting, adjustments, removal, first retainers);
• the payment schedule;
• the public reimbursement basis, where one applies.

The quote is issued on the standard French form, in French, the document your mutuelle will ask for; an English summary for an international insurer is provided on request. You take it home, and nothing starts before you have signed it.

Paying in stages

Fees are spread over the treatment according to the schedule in the quote: a first payment when the appliance is fitted, then instalments at regular intervals until the braces are removed. Each payment gives rise to an invoice for your insurer. If treatment is interrupted, only the stages completed are due.

French public health insurance: children and adults

Under 16. For a treatment that begins before the 16th birthday, the Assurance Maladie reimburses a basis of €193.50 per semester for up to 6 semesters, whatever the technique, and a first year of retention on a basis of €161.25. Cover is subject to prior approval, requested by the practice with the quote. The difference between this basis and the fee is paid by the family, often with a contribution from a mutuelle.

Adults. Adult orthodontics is not reimbursed by French public health insurance, with one exception: a single semester of preparation before jaw surgery, on prior approval. The first consultation is reimbursed on the conventional basis with your carte Vitale, since the practice is in sector 1.

Mutuelles and international insurers

Many French complementary insurers (mutuelles) reimburse orthodontics beyond the public basis, and some pay a fixed amount per semester or year for adults. International and expatriate plans vary widely: children only, adults up to an annual ceiling, or no orthodontic cover at all. Check your policy before the first consultation and ask whether your insurer needs the quote before treatment begins.

The practice provides the documents claims usually require: the itemised quote, an invoice for each payment and, on request, an English summary of the treatment plan and a certificate of the dates of treatment.
